November is National COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) Awareness Month as well as the month of the Great American Smokeout, the American Cancer Society’s initiative to encourage smoking cessation. In the fall 2013 issue of The Ochsner Journal, Moody-Thomas et al. evaluate the efficacy of the 5A protocol (ask, advise, assess, assist, and arrange) for treatment of tobacco use as implemented in Lousiana’s public hospital system through the Louisiana Tobacco Control Initiative. See their results regarding an assessment of patient tobacco use, quit attempts, and perceptions of provider treatment before and after protocol implementation.
