Featured Article: Effects of Thiamine on Cardiac Function in Patients With Systolic Heart Failure

ECG_heartAs National Heart Month draws to a close, we want to feature some of the latest cardiovascular work from The Ochsner Journal. James J. DiNicolantonio et al review the effects of thiamine on patients with systolic heart failure.

Many patients with congestive heart failure have thiamine deficiencies, and recent trials have attempted to determine if thiamine supplementation helps these patients. Using a systematic review and metaanlysis of randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of thiamine supplementation, DiNicolantonio et al noted thiamine supplementation led to significantly improved net change in left ventricular ejection fraction compared to placebo. Further trials will need to continue to explore the possible role of thiamine supplementation in patients with congestive heart failure.
