Ochsner Journal Reports Cutting-Edge Therapies in Cancer Services

The life-changing impact of a cancer diagnosis is familiar to many of us, either directly or through family members or close friends. And while a cancer diagnosis can never be called good news, recent advancements in treatment are providing hope and extending the lives of many patients. Articles in the winter 2017 issue of Ochsner Journal, devoted to the Ochsner Cancer Services Center of Excellence, explore many of these cutting-edge therapies.

Chemo is no longer the only game in town. Evolving knowledge and research breakthroughs have resulted in agents that treat specific mutations and inhibit the pathways that allow cancers to proliferate and metastasize. Another novel treatment option is drugs that manipulate the immune system so tumors cannot suppress the body’s immune response.

The winter issue of Ochsner Journal highlights 5 original research projects featuring colorectal cancer, pulmonary carcinoid tumors, breast cancer, and renal cell carcinoma. In addition, 8 review articles focus on the most up-to-date information in the field. An editorial describes the development of Ochsner’s phase I cancer research program. Finally, case reports tell the stories of individuals who have waged courageous battles with the disease.
