Ochsner Journal CiteScore 2019

Since 2016, Elsevier’s CiteScore has provided a free, transparent, and nonexclusive alternative to the Web of Science not-free, not-transparent, and exclusive Journal Impact Factor. Much like the Web of Science Impact Factor, the Elsevier CiteScore is based on the number of citations divided by the number of articles published in a certain period of time. We have been reporting the Ochsner Journal CiteScore, along with other citation metrics, for many years.

Beginning with the 2019 CiteScore, Elsevier changed the calculation methodology in an effort to provide a fairer comparison between journals. Now, the CiteScore calculation includes only peer-reviewed publication types—articles, reviews, conference papers, book chapters, and data papers—in the citation numerator and publication denominator. Previously, all publication types were included in the calculations, such as editorials, news items, letters, and notes, even though these types of articles had less probability of being cited than journal articles.

The other change to the calculation methodology was to extend the citation period from 3 to 4 years.

According to information provided by Elsevier, more than 13,000 titles that have a 2019 CiteScore don’t have a Web of Science Impact Factor. The Ochsner Journal is one of those titles. Further, of the 25,303 titles that have a 2019 CiteScore, 5,710 of them are open access. The Ochsner Journal is one of those open-access titles.

After making these methodology changes, Elsevier recalculated the CiteScores for all the journals in the database. As a consequence, the Ochsner Journal 2018 CiteScore increased from 1.01 to 1.9. We did even better than that in 2019.

The Journal’s CiteScore for 2019 is 2.2, reflecting 598 citations divided by 278 published articles in the 2016 to 2019 time frame.

We’re proud of this number. But we want to do even better in 2020.
