Open Access Week 2020

Open Access Week is an international event that encourages discussion about making scholarly work available to everyone. The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), one of the establishers of Open Access Week, defines open access as “the free, immediate, online availability of research articles coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment.” Individuals, institutions, and organizations across the globe are celebrating this year’s International Open Access Week—October 19 to October 25, 2020.

The theme for Open Access Week 2020 is “Open with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion,” the third consecutive Open Access Week theme that focuses on equity and inclusion in scholarly publishing. In a blog post on the Open Access Week website, Nick Shokey, director of programs and engagement at the SPARC, writes: “International Open Access Week is a time for the wider community to coordinate in taking action to make openness the default for research and to ensure that equity is at the center of this work.”

The Ochsner Journal is published open access and has been since it was established. With the publication of our Winter 2019 issue, we took the next step and adopted a Creative Commons license, which means our articles can be freely shared without having to request permission. Authors retain the copyright to their work, and all Ochsner Journal articles, tables, and graphics can be reused and republished by anyone, as long as users provide a full citation to the Ochsner Journal issue in which the article was originally published. The Ochsner Journal Editorial Board is proud that authors do not pay a cent to be published in the Journal, that readers can access all content at no cost, and that no one pays licensing fees to reuse materials. We truly provide “free, immediate, online availability of research articles coupled with the rights to use these articles fully in the digital environment.”
